Once you booked your flights and sometimes even your accommodation you start the process of applying for your visa. What happens if your visa gets denied? Unfortunately, if your visa gets denied there is not much travel insurance can do.

Why did your visa get rejected

Your visa rejection could be due to various reasons like that you as the traveller might have applied for the visa too late or that you have a criminal record or convictions linked to you. This is why insurers would not cover you for visa rejection.

Trip cancellation insurance

There is however some workaround you can do to get refunded for your trip. You can use the trip cancellation insurance that most travel insurance policies offer as a standard. So if you cancel your trip before you leave you might be able to get a refund. This is only if you travel insurance policy offers you a “cancel without a reason” option as part of the cover.

If you've already left

It’s important to note – you can’t apply for cancellation cover if you have already left for your trip and due to your visa your destination country will not agree to let you into the country. You have to cancel prior to the trip departing.
